It’s go time around the Elle offices, and it seems that folks being nice to one another is going to be the downfall of the show. Weren’t we promised the meanest contestant ever? I have yet to identify who that is…we could go with Meghan, but she doesn’t seem all that mean, just a snob.

The Assistant Challenge

There’s a guest on the show this week and it’s none other than Anne Slowey’s own niece, Erin. How/why they put this child up to this is beyond me, but Erin portrays herself as a mini-Anne, complete with a demanding, rude voice and stoic attitude. The challenge is for each stylist to pitch a birthday party idea for Erin’s upcoming 10th birthday. Whomever she picks will win the challenge. Sounds easy enough, right?

More Stylista

The stylists are given $50 for supplies for their pitch. Instantly, Cologne thinks of an Eloise theme, while Johanna feels she’s out of her element. She doesn’t work well with kids, and doesn’t think she can impress Anne and Erin. As the group runs around New York City, Kate realizes she forgot her money back at the office. No one rescues her, so she’s wandering around until Cologne offers to buy her a cupcake, which will be part of the pitch. Sweet, but will this be Cologne’s downfall? Had it not been for her, I’m sure no one would have bothered to help Kate out.

They return to the office to pitch ideas. Danielle wants a rock star theme, Meghan a pirate theme, and Cologne’s Eloise idea falls flat (which I thought was a really cute idea). In the end, Johanna’s savvy wins her the prize after she pitches a fashion show-themed party (which sounds kind of hokey to me).

Since she won, Johanna gets to pick the teams:

Team 1: Danielle, William and Devin

Team 2: Cologne, Ashlie, and Kate

Team 3: Johanna, Meghan, Dyshaun

Johanna feels that Meghan and Dyshaun have great taste, and leaves the other stylists to fend for themselves. I’m not sure what she sees in either of these two, since neither seem very trustworthy, but I guess she’ll find that out soon enough.

The Junior Editor Challenge

The Junior Editor Challenge this week will involve choosing a stylish mother/daughter duo at Erin’s party and creating a trend page based on their clothing.

Johanna oversees the party since it was her idea that won, and she does a good job delegating duties and making sure things are done in time for Anne’s arrival.

The party kicks off and immediately the groups start to browse the partygoers to search for the most stylish mother/daughter team. Kate has her eye on a woman in a ruffled white dress, and sits too long to pick her. Before she knows it, Johanna’s team is schmoozing the woman and telling her they want her for their piece. Kate feels defeated and barges in (probably not the most professional thing to do), saying she wanted the woman first.

Cologne and Ashlie seem embarrassed by this, and decide to turn the woman over to the other team, despite the fact that they also wanted her. Kate is already upset and the foray into creating the trend page will only make things worse.

After selecting their duos, the teams photograph them and work to create a trend page using things from the Elle closet. Team 1 is opting for a graphic page with tons of color and prints, while Team 2 is choosing a metallic theme. Team 3 is mixing the idea of pretty things paired with something edgy.

The team’s present their pages to Anne Slowey, Joe Zee and guest judge, Cynthia Rowley. Team 1 is loved by the entire panel, and Anne feels it slightly goes off on the bottom right handside, but still commends the group for choosing such an on-point trend. Team 2 is criticized for selecting a trend that has already been hammered into people’s heads. Kate quickly pipes in and says that her group wouldn’t listen to her, and that most of the pieces weren’t her idea. Meghan defends her saying that she heard Kate speaking out against the other two team members and still nothing was done.

Team 3 presents their page and the panel loves it, but Anne is quick to point out that it has no shopping credits. This is a major no-no in the world of publishing, so they’ll obviously lose points for this.

Deliberation

Joe Zee and Anne agree that Team 1 is the winner, and that Team 2 and 3 are both rightfully on the chopping block. The two losing teams are brought in, and Team 3 is deemed safe since their page was pristine save for the credits.

Team 2 is left standing, with Kate, Ashlie and Cologne all facing elimination. Anne wonders why Cologne let their first selection of mother/daughter get away so easily, and tells her that in this business you have to speak up for yourself. Hm…she should have told this to Kate!

Ashlie and Kate are safe, and Cologne is sent packing. In some ways I feel she left too soon, but honestly I’m not loving anyone so far, so I wasn’t too sad to see her go.

Next week: tears from Ashlie and the entire group deals with still having Kate in the house. Damn, they hate her, don’t they?!
