What Not to Wear: Joy

by Samantha on March 29th, 2008

It’s Friday night! And you know what that means: a fresh episode of What Not to Wear!

Stacy and Clinton are in Austin once again to makeover Joy, a 23 year old woman whose fashion obsessions include clothes from the children department and an infamous purple faux (I hope!) raccoon tail. This thing is…oy, where do I begin? The worst thing I’ve ever seen? Apparently Joy attaches the tail onto anything and everything that she wears, including her trip to the go-cart track, which is where Stacy and Clinton pick her up. Joy looks a little scared when the duo bombard her. She doesn’t seem too thrilled for the makeover, but as usual the good ol’ Bank of America card loaded with $5,000 changes her mind pretty quickly.

A chat with Joy reveals that she’s an ex-exotic dancer and she’s having trouble transitioning into adulthood. You know how 23 is…it’s a weird age because you aren’t quite an adult (at least I wasn’t), and not a kid, so I can see where she’s having trouble. A trip to New York City is going to be a major shock for Joy from the looks of it.

Joy arrives in NYC and takes a whirl in the 360 mirror. In a black and red colorblock dress, furry hat and boots, Joy says she would wear this for a night on the town. Instead, Stacy and Clinton give her options that  are comfortable, but far more chic. Joy has no idea what fit is. The girl has t-shirts from GRANIMALS! Uh….yeah. Nearly every shirt shows her stomach off, and since she isn’t at the beach, it’s a real travesty. When Stacy and Clinton start throwing out her stuff, I was a little miffed. Clinton made a comment like, “Why are your eyes watering? Are you really going to miss this junk?” Rude, much? I know the job is to shake Joy of her bad fashion habits, but have a little sympathy for the girl.

Joy begins her shopping voyage, and has the basics down. She’s looking for feminine blouses, straight leg jeans, and  bright accessories. This doesn’t go well. Joy ends up buying a lot of things that she doesn’t even like. Stacy and Clinton don’t like the pieces much on their own, but with bright extras, they teach Joy how to style them appropriately. A dark brown satin tunic is less dowdy when cinched by a wide black belt, and statement necklaces are brought in to top off dresses and tights. Clinton points out that it’s texture, color and shine that you’re looking for when shopping for accessories to pull together a look.

Off to the stylist’s chair, where Joy’s hair is take to a soft caramel color and chopped off, where it skims her jawline (which is gorgeous and rivals Reese Witherspoon). It’s a brilliant color and cut for Joy, and one of the best changes I’ve seen on What Not to Wear. For makeup, Joy learns to top her foundation with a brightener under her eyes. By filling out her brows, Joy’s entire face changes. Dark liner is swept up to create a subtle cat eye. Joy has stunning cheekbones, and she learns that a simple 3-step blush process will really make them pop even more so.

After the hair/makeup reveal, Joy looks AMAZING! She looks like a model! I can’t wait to see the look on our fashion duo’s faces when they see her. Stacy is flipping out, and poor Joy is in tears. I can’t wait to see Joy’s fiancee’s face when he lays eyes on his soon-to-be bride. Logic says her friends and family are going to be floored when they see her. The girl looks like a totally different person, and I mean that in the best possible way. This haircut has transitioned her entire look, so no matter what she wears, she looks like an edgy fashionista. With hugs and tears, Joy’s family embraces her and the new look that is coming along with her.

30 opinions for What Not to Wear: Joy

Hey, I just wanted to say thank you for the great rendition of my New York experience. It was amazing and I know, I do look totally different. It’s been a month and half since I’ve been back and things are really starting to progress. I’m now a promotional model for At&T and AJ Allure Promotions. I’ve spent years slaving in dog kennels so it’s been a big change. I also so that you said I look like Reese Witherspoon. Thanks for the compliment but check out old pictures of Faye Dunaway when she was in Bonnie and Clyde. It’s creepy how close I look to her. The whole time I was in New York the producers kept saying I looked like a movie star but they couldn’t figure out who. After Nick cut my hair Carmindy came in, nailed it on the head, and everyone agreed.

    ~Anyway~
Thank you for the kind words. It was the experience of a lifetime. I’ll probably never have the chance to go to New York again. I stayed in an amazing hotel and the Giants won the superbowl the first night I was there. The entire city exploded. I’ll never forget what I learned about how to dress, other people’s perspective of me, as well as what I learned about myself.

Overall, Stacey, Clinton, Nick, and Carmindy were brutally honest on camera but explained alot more off. The producers were my entourage and soon became my friends. There’s so much about the show I wish I had time to share. There are hours and hours of filming that take place, ending in 40 minutes of re-living the biggest humiliation and transformation of my life on national television. My friends and family were all in tears when I revealed my new look at Qua, Austin’s most upscale bar. Friends and family came from all over the country for my big reveal. I could never thank everyone enough…

    :-)

Congratulations on such a positive (albeit painful) experience! I think you look wonderful, but it’s the confidence that really shines through. Thank you for a glimpse behind the scenes. I’m a fan of the show and always wonder what it’s like to actually live through it. You’re a braver woman than I am! Now for a completely shallow questions… amongst all your fabulous outfits, I was completely drooling over those tall boots you bought. Can you please tell me who makes them? Also, I have similar coloring to you and loved the clean look Carmindy gave you. Can you tell me what she used?

Congratulations again and much success in all your future endeavors!

Thanks Diane! The boots are Fornarina Nico Tall Slouch boots. They rock, the leather is soooo soft and they’re really comfortable. The best thing is you can wear them pulled up with a dress or scrunch them down with leggings.

Nick and Carmindy both wrote a detailed description of their portion of the makeover process. I’ll can write out the entire step by step process if you’d like. Everything she used was from her line which will be out in April. It’s Sally Hansen- Natural Beauty inspired by Carmindy. I always look like I have bags under my eyes since I’m Native American and have high cheek bones.

    Joy,

I really liked the new hairstyle you got. I have been wanting a new style and I’m seriously considering getting this kind of cut and style after seeing you on What Not to Wear. You said in a post above that Nick gave you a detailed description of what he did. Can you post that as well? I’d like to know what kind of maintenance and products it requires at home to keep it styled as nice as you had it on the show. Is it easy to keep up? I hope you see this. Thanks.

    Joy,

I think out of all What Not to Wear shows, I enjoyed your episode the most because I identified with you (controlling relationship during that time of life, style of clothes before, the style I’ve been trying to get myself into after). :)

Your haircut though, was absolutely amazing. I’m planning on donating my long hair, but a picture of your new hair (if you don’t mind posting one!) would be wonderful to help me explain to the hairdresser what I’m looking for. :)

PS - You rock! It’s not every day you see someone who’s been on TV get online like a “real” person and actually talk with people. *high five!*

    Joy,
I just want to say you look amazing! I just finished watching the show and your transformation is incredible. I was watching it with my boyfriend and we both agreed that you remind us of a more natural Victoria Beckham with that haircut. We also checked out the pictures of Faye Dunaway, and you really do have such a close resemblance to her! Your face is gorgeous and now you can actually see your amazing cheekbones with that cut! It made me very happy to hear that you’re now a promotional model. Good for you! I hope you continue to keep up with this makeover because you truly look so beautiful. And thanks for posting the makeup step-by-step process…Good luck with everything in the future! :)

I know this may not matter or if it does may be completely disagreed with, but Joy.. I loved the dingly tail. I’ve always been bothered by the idea that we need to dress a certain way to fit in with other people. Sometimes its the strange things we like build our personality. Why can’t people accept what we wear and stop trying to push us toward looking like the magazine models. I want to be me, not something someone else would want me to be. Screw media. Its what is destroying people. Joy, your beautiful either way.

    Joy,

Any chance you can tell us what the name of that accessory store you went to? The one in the scene where Clinton shows you how to put an outfit together with “color, pattern, texture, and shine” :)

Your outfits were totally hot, and so are you! Hope you are keeping up that amazing look!

    Thanks!

My dear, you rock! Faye Dunaway is exactly whom I thought of when I saw you on the show. She’s considered one of the most beautiful people in the world– ever! So take that confidence and wear it babe. I love the bob, by the way, much cooler than the frizzy hippy do. That’s from one Joy to another…my name is Joy too!

    Hi Joy,

What was the brand name of the cute boots you bought and modeled at the end for Stacy and Clinton? They had a small heel and tied snugger at the top on your calf?

    Thanks!

    Joy,

The episode you were on was my favorite yet! You had such a transformation. It was amazing. I thought it was so wierd that the elderly man just came into the store and told you how great you looked. He was quite right. Your clothes are so cool and along with you haircut and makeup you looked absolutely awesome. I was wondering what store you got the purple top that you wore at the end of the show with the white jacket. It was totally adorable. Congrats!

I just saw the show and Joy you look amazing!! I was excited to see what you looked like after the makeover right from the beginning because I knew they were going to be able to multiply how pretty you already were! I have actually been trying to find a picture of you after your makeover because I want to get my hair cut like yours! So if anyone can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it!

    Jenn -

Go to the first post in this comment section - it is from Joy - and click on her name at the top of the post. That takes you to her myspace page. On that page, click on View My: Pics. She has an album of her What Not to Wear reveal pics that shows a few pics of her new hairstyle. I got my hair cut like Joy’s after seeing her episode too.
